SPIDERMAN WEB OF SHADOWS REVIEW :

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is an action adventure game that will have you playing as a hero or a villain in a free-roaming environment.

To describe this game in one word, that would be "addictive". Another word that comes to my mind is "cool", cause that's what this game is.

Now, first of all, let me write a few lines regarding some reviews I read surfing the web. I've been reading a lot of negative reviews about this game. Some say this game is repetitive, others infinitely complain about game freezes, stutters and crashes, and general graphic problems.

This hasnt happened on my PC (and I have a pretty average one by today's standards). Actually the game plays wonderfully on my 2 years old rig (Athlon 64 x2 4200+, 2gb RAM @400mhz dual channel, Ati Radeon x1950pro 512 ddr3 (catalyst 8.10), Win XP pro SP3), so I dont know why everyone's complaining, but I'll go on ahead and review the game itself.

So... after reading tons of "dammit the game crashes on me/freezes on X part/is optimized like crap!" comments, I was afraid to get this and get stuck with a crappy and mediocre port. Luckily, I was DEAD wrong.First things first.

The intro blew me off, as it starts the game with a bang. It completely threw me off, and in a completely good way.

I wont spoil it for you, but the intro sequence is just brilliant, its presented in sort of a max payne/gritty police story feel type of sequence, and it works just amazing. That's the first thing I noticed, that completely surprised me. The game is plagued by brilliant things like that, which are ingenious, and never before seen in a spiderman game.

For instance, the combat. Its just FUN, and I've never seen moves like the ones spidey pulls of in this game. A lot of capoeira-like moves were placed in there by the motion-capture masters. Simply great.
The sound is perfect, you can hear the whole city, spidey's and everyone footsteps, and you run or bounce through NY streets and buildings. You can even tell when someone is following you by hearing the quick steps nearing you (you'll see when you fight against hidden symbiotes).

Even more, you can hear glass shattering from shop windows, cars hitting walls and eventually blowing up as you are blocks away from some enemies wrecking havok, fighting police or S.H.I.E.L.D quarantine forces.
Another surprising and non-orthodox thing this game has: Dialogue.

This is the first time I hear such great dialogue in an action game. The lines delivered by spidey and the various heroes and villains are funny, interesting, witty and they are abnormal for a superhero game. How is this? You'll know when you talk to the several heroes and foes scattered around the story. The dialogue has got a level of pseudo-realism and authenticity I haven't found in any game of this kind. Most dialogue on this type of game is superficial and shallow.

For instance, early on in the game you meet Luke Cage, who helps you control and "understand" 2 rival gangs that are duking it out on the streets of NY.
Now, you hear Luke EXPLAINING to you that not all gangbangers are bad people, they just grew with all that, and its the only thing they know and think capable of doing, that's their reality. Other example, after helping Luke control the gang activity, he comments on spidey's fighting abilities, saying something like "You've got potential kid, but you're not a very good fighter. You're going one-on-one against each oponent, when you could do so much more. With your agility and speed, you should be bouncing on their heads back and forth, never knowing what hit them". Dialogue is amazing in every character you meet during your adventure.

Speaking of which, character interaction is a big part of this game, and its done in, again, a refreshing and RPG-like way. You will meet several heroes and villains (moon knight, black cat, etc...), and according how you play and behave and what choices you make, you will be able to call for their help, or not.

The choices you make REALLY have an impact on the story, missions and scenes you will see along the story.
And once more, this time the choice between being black and red spiderman is amazingly done. Unlike any other spidey game in the past, it is actually cool and great to use BOTH suits (the effect when you switch between the suits on the fly is GREAT).

For instance, with black suit you can lift and throw cars (at pedestrians, at shops, at police, at everything you want). With red suit you cant.

At one point you will fight a bigass robot (several of them, later on) and with black suit, you can throw a car at it and stun the robot. This will initiate a "push the button" sequence which will disable its' machine gun, and eventually open the robot's cockpit and toss away the pilot, intiating the robot's self-destructing sequence. This cannot be achieved while in red-suit spidey, since you cant throw cars.
With black suit you can grab your enemy from a distance via the symbiote's tendris and literally choke him to death (with the proper upgrade bought).

With red suit you can do some incredibly amazing, devastating and acrobatic airborne combos, using your enemy almost like a toy or a baseball. Really nice.
There are TONS of moves to use and unlock, so you can never get bored of the fighting, since every move is as effective as the other one, and equally deadly.

Dont know if I'm forgetting something, but you'll find out soon enough when you try the game for yourself, which is the ultimate review, is when you do it yourself in front of the game.
So, my advise would be, PLAY THIS GAME, and I hope none of those crashes of freezes happen on your machine, as it did on mine.
Take care and enjoy the game!
